Herbert was baptized and became a member of Fourth Mt. Zion Baptist Church at an early age. He was educated in Nottoway County public school through eighth grade and left school to go to work to help provide for his siblings.
Herbert had an entrepreneurial spirit. He was a Self-Employed Logger and Homesteader for over half of his life in Crewe, Virginia. He operated his Home Improvement business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for a number of years . He was an avid collector, always seeking hidden treasures. He was the owner of many collections and always saw the hidden value and the potential, especially things with wheels. Herbert was an outdoorsman and strongly encouraged others to be the same. He thoroughly enjoyed eating, spending time with his family, fishing, hunting (his dogs), gardening (single row, hill method, rototilling) and tinkering on his things with wheels.
Herbert leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted family: former wife, Violet Jones and daughter, Diane Jones of Crewe, VA; daughter, Debbie( Theodore) Eppes of Newport News, VA; son, Herbert Jones Jr. of Crewe, VA; daughter, Brenda (Michael) Powell of Richmond, VA; daughter, Charlene (Jerry) Phillips of Crewe, VA; six grandchildren: Antonio Wilson, Monique Eppes, Michael Powell Jr., Theodore Eppes III, Kandis Powell, and Keante’ Eppes; four great grandchildren: Antonio Wilson Jr., Meena Wilson, A’mya Wilson, and A’maray Wilson all of Crewe; two brothers: Bobby Jones of Philadelphia, PA and Charles Jones of Crewe, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
