Obituary for Herbert W. Harper
Herbert W. Harper (affectionately knows as “Dean” or “Harper”), son of the late Floyd and Bertha C. Harper, was born on May 13, 1926 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. He departed this life on November 1, 2008. He worshipped at churches in Baltimore City.
He received his education in the Nottoway County schools. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1945.
He became employed by the Baltimore Mass Transit Administration as the first Black streetcar driver. Then he was a tractor trailer driver for Baltimore Carolina Trucking Company. At age forty-eight, he began working for the Port of Baltimore where he remained for twenty-four years, and from which he later retired at age seventy-two.
Herbert entered into Holy Matrimony with Angelia Williams Harper and from that union came six children.
He leaves to cherish his precious memory: six daughters, Alice Carter, Cherie Morgan, Shameka Harper, Sherice Harper, Sharonda Harper and Tamesha Fields; four sons, Daryl Harper, Donte Harper, Damont Harper and Antoine Williams (son James Morgan preceded him in death): seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; three sisters, Reverend Addie Holloway of Amelia, Virginia, Shirley A. Fowlkes (Charles) of Jetersville, Virginia and Laura M. Anderson (Ray) of Blackstone, Virginia; three brothers, Earnest Mayes Harper (Hattie) of Kenbridge, Virginia, Floyed Edward Harper (Emma) of Washington, DC and Earl J. Harper of Salem, Oregon; devoted niece, Shirley Temple Wilson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Hawkes Funeral Home Chapel, Blackstone with interment in the Greenview Cemetery.
