Obituary for Herbert S. Holt, Jr.
Herbert Samuel Holt, Jr. entered into eternal slumber on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at his earthly home in Powhatan, VA. Herbert was born to the former Eleanor Clark and Herbert S. Holt on August 9, 1953 in Norfolk, VA. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, Norfolk, VA in 1972 after which he was consistently employed with The Old Dominion Tobacco Company and Kemps Landing Public School System both located in Virginia Beach. Herbert had been an employee of Lowe’s since 1987, initially as a ‘boom truck driver’ and after acquisitioned by Stroeber’s Contractor’s Yard, he served as Delivery Manager. Herbert accepted Christ as his person Savior at the age of twelve where he attended The Campostella Heights Seventh Day Adventist Church. He continued to learn and grow in his faith in addition to serving as a Junior Deacon. Herbert joined in holy matrimony with Gwendolyn Eugenia Bell of Powhatan, and this union was blessed with two beautiful daughters, Candi and Chela. The family moved from Virginia Beach, VA to Powhatan where they established a relationship with Hollywood Baptist Church. Herbert made a decision to join as a watchcare member and serve this branch of Zion in September, 1998. He served in the Usher’s Ministry until his illness. He loved fishing, hunting and his rabbit dogs. He was the past president of The Last Chance Hunt Club of Amelia, VA. He was a devoted father and cherished his girls. Herbert relished in the growth and success of both girls, particularly watching both of them graduate from Norfolk State University in 2007. The twinkle of his eye was his beloved wife, whom he affectionately called “Ms Holt”, whose arms held him when God said “well done my good and faithful servant - welcome home”. Preceded in death by his father, Herbert S. Holt, Sr., and a sister, Peggy Holt, Herbert leaves to cherish fond memories a beloved and devoted wife, Gwendolyn B. Holt; two loving devoted daughters, Candi Shaunti Martha Ellen and Chela Rashell Holt both of Norfolk, VA; a beloved mother, Eleanor C. Holt of Norfolk, VA; one sister, Valerie Butler (Leon) of Dale City, VA; two brothers, Charles (Sandra) of Irving, TX and Calvin Holt of Norfolk, VA; one aunt, Mary Freeman (John) of Norfolk, VA; three uncles, Wilford (Ann), Marvin (Freda) and Leon Clark all of Windsor, NC; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, two devoted - Reginald Johnson (aka ‘Flip’) of Norfolk, VA and Melvin Goode of Powhatan, VA. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 11: a.m. from Hollywood Baptist Church, Powhatan with interment in the church cemetery.
