Obituary for Herbert E. Crawley, Sr.
Our devoted husband, father, brother, and friend, Herbert Eugene Crawley, Sr., affectionately known as “Bim” or “Bimbo”, suddenly left us on Sunday morning, November 15, 2009, to be with his father in Heaven which left a void that can never be filled. He was born October 5, 1949 as the second son of the late John E. and Annie M. Crawley. He was preceded in death by his brother Walter.
Herbert made good and lasting impressions with those who knew and associated with him on various levels. He made sure that his household and loved ones were cared for and extended a helping hand to others whenever needed.
Herbert was the product of the Nottoway County Public School system. At an early age, he was baptized and joined the Union Baptist Church. On September 1, 1973, he was united in marriage to the late Nancy M. Branch and a son Durand was born. He later met Joan C. Johnson and they were married on November 20, 1976. To this union they had Demetria and Herbert Jr. He was first employed at the Bassett Veneer Plant in Burkeville and progressed to the Norfolk & Western Railroad. N & W later merged with Southern Railroad and the name was changed to Norfolk-Southern Railroad. He worked there for thirty-five years and began his retirement on October 6, 2009.
He was an active member of the Nottoway Branch NAACP, Evergreen Benjamin Lodge #131 as Senior Warden, and the New Breed Racing Club. He was an avid drag racing fan and owned his own race car.
He leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted wife of thirty-three years, Joan J. Crawley; his loving and caring children, Durand, Demetria and Herbert Jr.; a caring stepson, Anthony Branch; grandchildren, DaQuan, Adashya, Monay and Jamarion; devoted siblings, Elizabeth, Albert (Mary), Dorothy, Pearl, Gwendolyn and Eric; a brother-in-law, Evary Johnson; four nieces and nephews; a host of aunts; devoted friends, Tony, Mearl, Earl, Slim, Ceasar, Edward (SC), Steve and Damien along with his Masonic brothers and members of the New Breed Racing Club which includes their wives; many caring cousins, and loyal friends and neighbors.
Funeral Services Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, Crewe with interment in the Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice.
W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home of Blackstone in charge of arrangements.
