Obituary for Henry M. Green, Sr.
Henry Madison Green, Sr., was the first of five children born to the union of Robert Henry and Sarah Jane Green on August 3, 1927 in Nottoway County, Virginia.
On Thursday, April 3, 2014, he peacefully entered into eternal rest at his home in Nottoway, Virginia with his devoted son, Henry Jr. by his side.
Henry received his formal education in the Nottoway County Public Schools. He joined the U.S. Army and on his 18th birthday was deployed to Japan and served in World War II, earning the WW II Victory Award. Henry began his early employment with the old Norfolk and Western Railway and was later employed by the Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in Burkeville, VA, where he served for over 25 years. During his employment with Piedmont, Henry completed the Curriculum of Study at Southside Community College and was awarded the Human Services Certificate. He was promoted to Psychiatric Technician. He loved his job and taking care of his patients. He continued his training by taking classes at Old Dominion University School of Continuing Education Studies.
Henry was baptized at an early age and was a member of the New Poplar Mt. Baptist Church for many years, where he served as a Sunday School teacher, Deacon, Treasurer and Chairman of the Deacon Board. Henry loved his church and was dedicated to his work for the Lord. He was a faithful church member until his health started to decline.
Henry loved to fish and hunt and enjoyed taking his sons out with him to share these pastimes. He also loved gardening and reading. It was important to him to stay on top of current events and he had a love for knowledge. Books were some of his favorite gifts to receive and the Bible, by far, was his favorite.
At an early age, Henry had a dapper sense of style and a love for hats that affectionately earned him the name of “Flattop” among his friends. He is also known as “Jimmy” and “Jim” among his family and friends.
Henry spent the last years of his life caring for and doting over the love of his life – his wife, Sarah whom he adoringly referred to as his “sweet pretty baby”.
Henry leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved and devoted wife, Sarah; five loving children: Ruby Burrell (Cliff); Sarah DeShazior (Carl); Joey Green (Lydia); Henry Green, Jr.; and Tommie Green (Kearnetta); nine grandchildren: Lorita Nash; Daphne Gray ; Michael Tucker; Kevin Tucker; Lauryn Burrell; Dallas DeShazior; Shaniece Green; Christopher Green and Philip Green; devoted and loving siblings: Marie Fitzgerald; Sylvester Green; and Mildred Green; two sisters-in-law: Ester Walker and Estelle Eppes; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Henry was preceded in death by two children: George Dodson and Doris Tucker; and a sister Mable Green.
