Obituary for Helen G. Haskins
Ms. Helen Gertrude Haskins departed this life on June 10, 2020 at the Hickory Hill Retirement Community in Burkeville, Virginia after a lengthy illness. Helen was born on December 13, 1937 to the late Preston Oliver and Dorthy Lee of Lynchburg, Virginia. She was one of seven children, three brothers preceded her in death, Oliver, James and Richard.
Helen graduated from Dunbar High School in Lynchburg, Virginia and later attended Piedmont Geriatric Hospital School for Nursing where she became a registered nurse for more than thirty years.
Helen’s giving heart and love for people allowed her to connect with her patients and do the job she loved so much, until she retired October of 1991. Helen was a very crafty person, in her spare time she loved to sew, make dolls and crochet, as well as spend time with her companion, Edward Jennings who preceded her in death. One of her greatest loves were her dogs whom she affectionately named Snowball, Midnight, Keke and Smokie. She would open her heart to anyone she met. Her kind spirit, generous and genuine love for people made her an exceptional person and she will be missed by all who had the honor of knowing her.
Helen leaves to mourn her passing: one brother, Joseph Lee of Lynchburg, Virginia; two sisters, Dorothy Foster of Norfolk, Virginia and Annette Kirbin; three very dear friends, Vivian Cardwell, Edith Williams and Ms. Edna Blackwell, who was a friend and caretaker; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
