Obituary for Hazel W. Fowlkes
Hazel White Fowlkes departed this life on May 26, 2022 peacefully at home surrounded by family.
Hazel, the daughter of Robert and Lucy White was born in Nottoway County on December 4, 1933. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Lucy White; five sisters and four brothers.
Hazel was educated in Nottoway County public schools. At an early age she was baptized and became a member of First Nottoway Baptist Church. She served on the Usher Board and in the Kitchen Ministry until her health failed. Hazel retired from Levi Strauss in Blackstone, VA.
She was united in Holy Matrimony to Thaddues Fowlkes (who preceded her in death), they were blessed in this union with two daughters and one adopted daughter. One daughter, Viola Fowlkes Jackson preceded her in death.
Hazel was compassionate about cooking. She would always greet you with a big smile. Always willing to help anyone that needed help. She will always be remembered as the Community Grandmother, Aunt and friend. Hazel had a warm spirit and was loved by many.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory: daughter, Carolyn Clay (Alvin) of Blackstone, VA and adopted daughter, Lily Boxley of Richmond, VA; granddaughters, Shimeeka Clay and Deneen Dowtin of Crewe, VA; great grandchildren, Kevin Stokes Jr, Vineasha Stokes and Deon Clay; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; three devoted friends, Lois Carter, Thelma Tucker and Jacqueline S. Downs. Hazel loved all of her family but shared a special bond with her nephew, Roy Rogers that she also shared a birthday with.
