Obituary for Hazel L. Reynolds
Mrs. Hazel Elizabeth Lewis Reynolds was born June 5, 1924, in Nottoway County, VA to the loving family of the late Mr. Earnest Lewis and Mrs. Cora Jennings Lewis. She was educated in the Nottoway County public schools and graduated from Nottoway Training School. She was converted, baptized, and joined Union Baptist Church where she activated her Christian duties serving in various organizations and ministries. She had a beautiful alto voice, loved to sing, and therefore joined various choirs. She considered herself blessed to have become a Deaconess of the church. Hazel dedicated herself to providing and encouraging a higher education for each of her six children. Her work-life spanned many area businesses with last serving as an aid with the Green Thumb Organization at Blackstone Primary School.
Hazel met and married Mr. Jesse McCoy Reynolds and this union was blessed with six children - Yvonne, Jesse Jr., Brenda, Carol, Rodney and Connie. One son, Jesse McCoy Reynolds, Jr. pre-deceased her. She was also pre-deceased by a grandson, Michael Shine.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. In our hours of sadness, we are deeply touched by such a great loss. Although our hearts are sad with grief, our souls are uplifted because we know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Father.
Therefore we are always confident, knowing that whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord. We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. II Corinthians 5:6-8
We are so blessed and thankful for the years of her life that Hazel shared with us. For her children, she was the beacon of light that showed the way to the wisdom of God and all of his promises. No trial, tribulation or illness caused her faith to fail. Her faith was grounded in God.
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy….James 4:17
We will always treasure those previous years as she was truly a gift from God. She succumbed Friday, May 9, 2008, at Lexington Court Nursing Home in Richmond, VA.
Hazel is survived by her husband, Mr. Jesse M. Reynolds, Sr., of Crewe, VA; her son, Mr. Rodney Reynolds of Suitland, MD; four daughters, Rev. Dr. Yvonne Johnson of Blackstone, VA, Dr. Brenda Mayo of Richmond, VA, Dr. Carol Reynolds-Freeman of Ellicott City, MD, Mrs. Connie Reynolds-Shine of Woodbridge, VA; a sister, Mrs. Barbara Johnson of Baltimore, MD; a brother, Mr. Ulysses Lewis of Baltimore, MD; a brother-in-law, Mr. Herman Johnson and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Lois Lewis and Mrs. Adele Lewis; four sons-in-law, Mr. Curtis Johnson, Mr. Robert Mayo, Sr., Mr. Larry Freeman and Mr. Richard Shine; three daughters-in-law, Betty Reynolds, Cynthia Reynolds, and P.
