Obituary for Haynie M. Phillips
Haynie Mack Phillips was the fifth child of thirteen children born to the late Haynie and Hattie Phillips, on December 14, 1920 in Blackstone, Virginia.
Haynie received his early education in Blackstone, Virginia. He confessed Christ as his savior at an early age and was baptized at Mount Gazarene Baptist Church. He attended there until he left Blackstone and entered the U.S. Army. He served his country dutifully for several years.
During World War II, he was a prisoner of war in France for some time. He was eventually released and was honorably discharged from his military duties due to medical injuries.
Haynie never lived an independent life after his discharge from the Army. His mother and father became his loving caretakers until they were unable to carry out these responsibilities. Haynie relocated from Blackstone to New York, where he stayed initially with his sister Elizabeth. He later resided with his brother Norman and his wife who became his care takers for many years.
When Norman was no longer able to care for him, Haynie was given several options as to where he would like to live. He emphatically stated that he wanted to return home to Blackstone. Haynie loved home and even when he was far away, his heart and love was always in Blackstone, Virginia.
After he returned to Blackstone his late brother Russell and his wife Evelyn became his caretakers and after Russell passed in 1994, Evelyn became his primary care taker with the loving help and support of her children. Haynie was well cared for and loved. He was surrounded by family and was able to complete his life’s journey in Blackstone which he proudly called “Home”.
On September 25, 2009, Haynie Mack Phillips departed this life. He leaves to cherish his memory, his son Hanie Ferrell (Vivian), of North Carolina, three grandchildren, Jemel Ferrell of North Carolina, Karim (Christel) and Adina Ferrell of New York, two sisters, Mildred Eskridge (James), Beatrice Patterson, one brother Lafayette Phillips (Annette), of Atlanta, Georgia, sister in law, Evelyn Phillips of Blackstone, Virginia, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
