Obituary for Harold L. Fowlkes
HAROLD LEON FOWLKES entered eternal rest and peace on Sunday, October 11, 2015 at Heritage Hall Health Care Center, Blackstone, Virginia. He was born in Nottoway County, Virginia on February 4, 1927 to the late Deacon Richard Fowlkes and Clara Webb Fowlkes. His wife, Martha, preceded him in death.
He attended the Nottoway Training School. At an early age, he joined the Poplar Lawn Baptist Church in Blackstone, Virginia.  He enlisted into active military service in August 1945 and received an honorable discharge from the Army of the United States in December 1946. After completing his military service, he returned to Blackstone where he was united in Holy Matrimony to Martha Hawkes, in December 1950. They later moved to Williamsburg where he was employed by the USA Transportation Center, Fort Eustis, Virginia.
After 34 years, Harold retired from the Department of the Army in December 1982. The couple eventually relocated back to Blackstone. Harold reunited with the Poplar Lawn Baptist Church upon his return to Blackstone. He served as Church Treasurer and worked faithfully with the Choir, Sunday School, and other projects to support the church. Harold loved planting in his garden, reading, and entertaining visitors at his home.
After the passing of his wife in 2009 and continuous health trials, Harold moved to Heritage Hall in January 2011 where he resided until the Lord called him home. He loved being close to home and looked forward to the visits and calls from the community. He had a very active personality with the staff and other patients at Heritage Hall. He could make you laugh and challenge your actions as he reminisced from life experiences.   Â
He leaves to cherish his memory two sisters, Portia Hobbs of Blackstone, Virginia, and Mildred Favors of Newark, New Jersey; three sisters-in-law, Ruby Fowlkes of North Carolina, Bernell Austin of New York, and Alice Hawkes of Blackstone; one brother-in-law, Wayland Hawkes of Randallstown, Maryland; a devoted niece, Sandra King, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. He will be missed and fondly remembered.
