Obituary for Gracie J. Fowlkes
Grace Fowlkes was the youngest of five children, born in Crewe, VA on September 27, 1929, to the late Carrie Jennings and Russell Jennings, Sr.
Grace was educated in Nottoway County Schools and joined Union Baptist Church at an early age. She was a part of the usher board for many years until relocating to Bridgeport, CT, where she worked as a manager at Fairfield Cleaners until her retirement. Grace was a faithful member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church (CT) and a part of the choir until moving back to Crewe, VA. Upon her return, she rejoined Union Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Sarah Coleman, until her health failed.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, Henry Fowlkes, one daughter, Barbara Jean (Bop/BJ) Jennings, siblings, Mary Fowlkes and Lelia Oliver, Amos Lee Jennings and Russell Jennings, Jr. and grandchildren, John Francisco (Johnny-Frank) Jennings, Sharonda Rembert-Adams (Da’Jon Adams), Vincent Shaqi Elijah Fowlkes and Nevaeh Colbert. She was also preceded by Beatrice (Bea) Fowlkes-Weaver (Minor “Bip”), Horace (Boo) Jennings, Archie (Popcorn) Jennings, Edward (Biggie) Fowlkes “Alvenia” and Charles Fowlkes.
To cherish her memory, she leaves one faithful and dedicated son Vincent Fowlkes (Crewe, VA); grandchildren: Jordan Fowlkes (VA), Shelby Fowlkes (CT), Darlene (Renee) Jennings-Rembert (William) (GA), Antonio (A-Jay) Soares III (Tessy) (CT); Great Grandchildren: Anthony Davis, TeAnna Rembert, Evan Perez, Marq Vines, Nicole Jennings-Boyle, Nikkea Rembert, Ja’Von Soares, Maya Rembert, Jurni Soares & Kalissa Samuel; Great Great Grand children: Emani Perez, Taliyah Rembert, Sariah Davis, Essence Perez, Antonio Vines-Soares and Brielle Childress; adopted granddaughter Whitney Colbert (Fred)(SC) and her six children Tygeir, Tyreese (Chunkum), Ny’Zerea, Lailai, Tyrique (Bob), Saniah. She also leaves two nieces, Shirley Tompkins (Norman) and Delois (Tookay) Rather. As well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will continue to celebrate her life.
Viewing Wednesday, December 4, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home, Blackstone where services will follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment Jennings Family Cemetery, Crewe.
