Obituary for Grace B. Spruill
Grace Harris Barrett Spruill was born on April 22, 1917 to the late Abraham Lincoln Barrett and Elizabeth Freeman Barrett in the family home in Charlotte Courthouse, VA.  Grace, the youngest of 10 children was a happy surprise to the family, bringing joy and laughter to the home.At an early age she united with the Nazareth Baptist Church in Phenix, VA.  after graduating from Central High School in Charlotte Courthouse in 1938, Grace headed North to Philadelphia to live with her late sister Pearl and brother-in-law the late Reverend Matthew Anderson Foster, and furtherd her education and training.  She then moved to New York to  live with her late sister and brother-in-law Maggie and Robert Gilbert.  Grace  married Willis Spruill in 1951 and worked for many years in Manhattan's Garment District, producing lingerie.  She subsequently managed WilGrace Realty in Manhattan.Grace moved to Mount Vernon in 1967 and joined Corinth Baptist Church, where Reverend James Dennis was the pastor.  She was very active on the Deaconess Board and other church activities, and remained there  until Revernd Dennis passed away.  Subsequently, she joined Bishop Luke Jones' congregation at New Life Fellowship, where she remained a member of the rest of her life.Grace lived in Mount Vernon for 40 years, spending her final days at the Wartburg Adult Care Community.  Throughout her life, Grace set out to live up to the promise of her name.  She made it her mission to introduce her friends and neighbors to Jesus Christ through fellowship and individual ministry.Grace was a lady in every sense of the word.  She was gentle in her speech and manner, and she believed in putting her best foot forward fashionably.  Grace was known for her sharp outfits, her manicured nails and her ever-present lipstick.She leaves to mourn a devoted great niece and caregiver, Amanda Barrett of Queens Village, NY; a sister-in-law, Helen Barrett of Phenix VA; a dear friend, Mrs. Zevenia Dennis of Mount Vernon, NY;  other relatives and friends.Funeral Services were held Sunday, January 20, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. from Nazareth Baptist Church, Phenix, VA with interment in the church cemetery.Michael W. Hawkes Funeral Home of Amelia was in charge of the arrangements.
