Obituary for Gloria D. Carrington
Gloria Dare Carrington, daughter of the late John B. and Nellie Tisdale of Lunenburg County, Virginia, was born on July 8, 1935. She departed this life on September 11, 2010.
Gloria, lovingly known as “MaMa” accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age, uniting with Friendship Baptist Church in Kenbridge, VA before becoming a faithful member of Fountain Baptist Church in Baltimore, MD.
She received her formal education at Lunenburg High School in Victoria, VA graduating class of 1954. After graduation she moved to New York for a short period before returning to Kenbridge, VA. Upon her return, she married the love of her life James Donald Carrington on March 23, 1957. To their union were born four lovely children, Barbara D. Moore, Linda D. Carrington, and Sharen Carrington and the late Donald P. Carrington.
In 1965 the family moved to Baltimore, Maryland where because of her love of caring for others, she was employed with Baltimore City Hospital in 1969 for 20 years. Gloria was a loving individual who adored her family and friends; especially gatherings where she made all feel welcome. Another love of Gloria’s was her love of flowers and plants. She had a special way of making all things grow.
Gloria’s easygoing personality and amusing sense of humor made her unique and loved. She had a lot of wisdom and stories to share and was respected by all. Gloria was not only a mother and grandmother to her family, but to their friends and the community as well. Mama had a sharp fashion sense from head to toe and loved to shop with friends. She loved to cook and no one would leave her house without a full stomach and a plate to go. Gloria was happy until the end because she was with family and friends.
Left to celebrate the memory of her life are her daughters Barbara D. Moore, Linda D. Carrington and Sharen Carrington; four grandchildren, Melanie T. Smotherman (Kevin), Kendall A Carrington, Tilden M. Tucker and Alexa J. Moore; one great grandchild, Kevin Carrington Smotherman; one sister, Dora Carrington (Conrad) Albuquerque, NM, one brother, David “Jimmy” Tisdale Kenbridge, VA.; Six sisters-in-laws; Nanny Doswell, Alice Hawkes, Mariam Hayman, Lucille Hawkes, Doris Tisdale, Vivian Carrington. One brother in-law Conrad Carrington and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and family.
Graveside Services Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 11:00 am at New Prospect Baptist Church, Blackstone.
