Obituary for Gertrude A King
Gertrude Alice King (Hicks), age 71, lovingly known by her family as “Sis”, suddenly departed this life on Tuesday, December 10, 2013. He called her to himself and affirmed, ‘JOB WELL DONE’. She was the second of seven children born to the late Arthur L. and Rosa J. Hicks on May 25, 1942 in Amelia County, Virginia.
At an early age, she joined Liberty Baptist Church in Amelia County and she always looked forward to going back home to attend church services and celebrations-such as the annual church revival in August. In 1961, she graduated from Russell Grove High School in Amelia, Virginia and continued her education at Smith Madden Business School in Richmond, Virginia.
On May 25, 1969, she was joined in holy matrimony to William Linwood King of Dinwiddie, Virginia. They later relocated to Southwest, Washington, DC. From this union, two sons, Tolaundo and Orlando, were born.
While living in Washington, DC she joined Rehoboth Baptist Church. In 1979, they moved to Fort Washington, Maryland, where she remained a faithful, longtime member. As a member of the church, she served on the Finance Committee, and was a member of the Sanctuary Choir serving in the capacity of President, Vice President and Treasurer for a combined total of 10 years. She expressed her unwavering love and dedication to children by serving as the Preschool Sunday School Teacher for over 30 years.
She was employed by the U.S. Department of State until her retirement in 1999. She then continued employment as a sales associate with several retail stores in the DC Metropolitan Area, to include the gift shop at Georgetown University Hospital, until 2006.
She was a devoted and loyal mother and grandmother. “Sis” loved family. She was a very loving and caring person who enjoyed walking, talking and sharing life’s precious moments with anyone she came in contact with. “Sis” enjoyed her days walking with the ladies of her neighborhood, attending Thursday’s worship service at Christ Missionary Baptist Church and Friday’s prayer circle with members of the Community.
She leaves to cherish her memories, two (2) loving and devoted sons, Tolaundo Tremel King, Sr. (Sherrell) of Charlotte Hall, Maryland and Orlando Terrell King (Allison) of Aquasco, Maryland. Three (3) grandsons, Tolaundo T. King, Jr. (TJ), Steven P. Hall and Trenton M. King,; two (2) granddaughters, Tiani S. King and Olivia T. King all of Maryland; three (3) brothers, Thomas L. Hicks (Ella) of Amelia, Va., Herbert Hicks (Joyce) and Louis Hicks of Richmond, Va.; three (3) sisters, Arlene H.
