Obituary for Gerald K. Griffin
Mr. Gerald K. Griffin known as “Griff” to his closest friends, answered the Master’s call and passed from this earthly life for eternal life on May 11, 2015. He was born on June 8th 1949 in Amelia, VA and is the only child born to the late Ms. Clara Griffin and Mr. Garrett Montague.
Gerald attended Amelia County public schools where he excelled in athletics playing varsity football, basketball, baseball and track. In 1968 he moved to Richmond, VA; where shortly afterwards he was drafted in the United States Army. Gerald served his country as a paratrooper in the Republic of Vietnam from November 30th, 1969 to June 3rd, 1970. For his bravery while fighting in Vietnam, on June 14th, 1970 by direction of the President of the United States, Gerald was awarded the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement while participating in Aerial Flight to fight with combat ground forces. As a paratrooper in Vietnam, he actively participated in more than twenty five aerial missions over hostile territory in support of operations against communist aggression. During all of these flights Gerald displayed the highest order of air discipline and acted in accordance with the best traditions of the service. By his determination to accomplish his mission, in spite of the hazards inherent in repeated aerial flights over hostile territory; and by his outstanding degree of professionalism and devotion to duty, Gerald brought credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States of Army.
After military service, Gerald returned to Richmond, VA where he continued to pursue his personal education by attending J Sargent Reynolds School of Business, Moseley Flint School of Real Estate, and the Richmond Technical center.
Gerald was employed at Phillip Morris Company for thirty years as a technician and fixer. After thirty years of work, he retired from Phillip Morris. Recreationally, anyone that really knowns “Griff” knew he was a sports enthuses. Sports has always been one of his passions in life; only surpassed by his love for family and friends.
Gerald is survived by one loving daughter Tonya (Aaron); two granddaughters, China & Cameron, all of whom are the joys of his life. He is also survived by three uncles, Bill, and Richard Griffin of Richmond and David Montague of New York; three aunts, Jane Richardson of Richmond, Clara Hubbard of Richmond, Catherine Fink and Pearl Jenkins of New York. His devoted friends, Mason Monroe of Mitchellville, MD; Herb Parker of Richmond, VA, Linda Simms of Richmond, VA and a host of other relatives and friends.
