Obituary for Garfield Chaffin
On March 3, 2017 at 9:00 a.m., Garfield Chaffin departed this life peacefully from his residence in Crewe, VA. Garfield was the third child of twelve children born to Willie Chaffin, Sr. and Allie Jennings Chaffin of Victoria, VA on February 14, 1927. Garfield was affectionately called ‘Field’ by family and friends.

Garfield loved the Lord and accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Olive Baptist Church where he remained faithful until he left home. He was educated in the Lunenburg County Public School System. In 1945, after graduating from high school, he joined the United States Army.

Garfield met the love of his life, Marie Oliver and they were married on April 19, 1954. To this union three children were born.

Garfield was employed by Phillip Morris Inc. in Richmond, VA and retired on March 1, 1992 after serving 19 years and one month.

He and Marie loved to travel and attended all of the Jennings and Oliver family reunions until his health began to decline. Some of his favorite pastimes were working on his cars, spending time with and helping the elderly. Garfield and Marie enjoyed eating out in all of their favorite restaurants, shopping and spending time with family and friends.

On September 23, 2009 Mr. Chaffin reaffirmed his faith and publicly confessed Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and was received into full membership at Heavens Best Healing and Deliverance Church in Clinton, MD under the leadership of Pastor Angelo O. Jones.

Garfield dedicated his life to raising his children, grandchildren and being a father figure to others. He loved his family up until his last days. His life was an extraordinary example of life, strength, faith, hard work and integrity. He leaves a legacy of lessons that will live on in his children, grandchildren and others for generations to come.

Garfield leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Marie Oliver Chaffin; one son, Jasper L. Chaffin (Shelia) of Hackensack, NJ; two daughters, Deloris Ward of Oxen Hill, MD and Shirley ‘Cookie’ Chaffin of Crewe, VA; six grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; six brothers, Eddie Chaffin Sr. of Burkeville, VA, Davis Chaffin of Petersburg, VA, Cloyd (Cleo) Chaffin, Eugene (Rosa) Chaffin, Walter (Donna) Chaffin and Waverly (Louise) Chaffin, all of Victoria, VA; one sister, Lillie Mae Chaffin of Victoria, VA; two brothers-in-law, Clarence (Ora) Oliver of Richmond, VA and Fred M. Oliver of Blackstone, VA; four sisters-in-law, Martha ‘Queen’ Parker, Eunice Oliver, Thomasine Oliver, all of Crewe, VA and Gloria Chaffin of Owings Mills, MD; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
