Mr. Freeman Allen Epes of Blackstone, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 5, 2026. He was born on August 11, 1929, to the late Sally Robinson and Chester Epes.
Freeman was educated in Nottoway County and attended Nottoway Training School. A man who deeply appreciated the simple joys of life, he took great pride in being an outdoorsman. He found peace and happiness riding his bicycle through the community, tending to his garden, and hunting squirrels and rabbits. In his quieter moments, he especially enjoyed watching classic Western films, which remained a favorite pastime throughout his life.
Freeman was a hardworking and dedicated provider. He was employed at Patterson Lumber Mill, where he worked faithfully as a lumberman for 20 years until his retirement. His strong work ethic, humility, and love for the outdoors were hallmarks of his character and left a lasting impression on those who knew him.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life of 40 years, Ms. Annie V. Fitzgerald-Smith, and his brother, Willie D. Epes.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved son, Kenneth Smith (Tracie); three granddaughters, Janine Britt (Duane), Sonya Smith (Shamecka), and Latasha Chandler; his great-grandchildren, Emoni Lewis, Kameron Britt, Sydney Britt, Mya Ricks, Dajhne Russell, Iyona Russell, and Jai’Ceon Smith; and one great-great-grandchild, Jahmir Moore and his sister-in-law, Leola Epes. He is also remembered fondly by a host of extended family members and dear friends.
Freeman will be remembered for his quiet strength, love of nature, and the legacy of family, hard work, and perseverance he leaves behind.
