Frank M. Goodman, Jr. of North Chesterfield, Virginia departed this life on Saturday, June 14th, 2025, at the age of 69 at VCU Health Systems (MCV) Richmond, VA after a short illness. He was born May 20, 1956, to the late Frank Melvin Goodman, Sr. and the late Thelma Harris Goodman at St. Phillips Hospital, Richmond, VA. He was baptized at a young age at Flower Hill Baptist Church, Amelia Virginia. He was educated at Richmond Public Schools and graduated from Huguenot High School. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University where he pledged Kappa Alpha Psi and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Administration of Justice and Public Safety in 1978 and joined the Amelia County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy Sheriff in September of that year.
Frank joined the Crewe Police Department in December of 1980 where he was the first Black Chief of Police and the youngest at the age 24. After marrying Sandra Birdsong on May 16, 1981, Frank joined Eleven Oaks Baptist Church in Crewe, Virginia where he served as Trustee and later became Chairman of the Trustee Board. Frank’s career progressed to working with the Department of Criminal Justice Services in 1984 as the Field Services Coordinator and in 1988 he moved to the Virginia Lottery as the Manager of Investigations and further progressed to the Assistant Security Director. He was a founding member of the Virginia Lottery. In 2004, because of Frank’s experience, he was sought after to begin employment with the start-up of the Tennessee Education Lottery in Nashville, Tennessee. While living in Nashville, Frank & family joined the Olive Branch Missionary Baptist Church where Frank served on the Parking Ministry and later joined Mt. Zion Full Gospel Baptist Church where he remained a member until leaving the Tennessee Lottery after 6 years. In May of 2010, Frank decided to relocate back to Virginia where he joined Mt. Gilead Full Gospel International Ministries and begin serving on the Security Ministry. In March of 2011, Frank began employment at VCU Health Systems as a Security Specialist and later as a Behavioral Health Security Specialist. Frank’s final employer was Sitemetric, LLC where he worked for 1 year and 9 months as the Training Coordinator and Compliance Agent. In September 2024, he began his own practice as owner/operator of Eagle Security Training Academy.
Frank is survived by: his loving wife, Rev. Dr. Sandra Renee Birdsong Goodman; two children, daughter, Shauntepia Goodman Young (Kendrick) and son, Ketri Lamar Goodman, Sr. (Ki’Arra); two grandchildren, Kali Marie August Goodman and Ketri Lamar Goodman, Jr.; sister, Myra Goodman Smith (Lawrence); niece, Lauren Smith; great niece, Skylar Abdelmageed; nephew, Jordan Welton; aunts, Lillian Hicks, Juanita Jones, Yvonne Harris and Louise Harris; uncle, Aubrey Harris; sister-in-law, Valerie Birdsong; mother-in-law, Annette Birdsong; Joshua Malone (children: Jamar, Leland, Adrick, Kamari & Jocelyn) and Julie Kay McKenney (Danny) child: Nicholas were adopted into the Goodman family; and a hosts cousins and other relatives and friends.
