Obituary for Evelyn L. Johnson
Evelyn L. Johnson entered into eternal rest on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the Beaufont Health & Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, VA.
Evelyn L. Johnson was born to the late Dolphus and Emma Jane Hawkes on June 8, 1924 in Nottoway County VA. She was preceded in death by her husband Alvin C. Johnson (married for 56 years), three brothers, Thomas Hawkes, Lincoln Hawkes, Webster Hawkes; three sisters, Erma Hobbs, Cornelius Hobbs and Lora Jane Hobbs.
She was baptized at an early age at Poplar Lawn Baptist Church, Blackstone, VA where she served faithfully on the Usher Board, the Missionary Circle, the Pastor’s Aid Ministry, and the Women’s Ministry. She loved Poplar Lawn Baptist Church dearly and regularly attended services until a decline in her health. Although, she was staying in Richmond with her son Kenneth and his wife because of her health the past four years, she was eager to get to Poplar Lawn whenever possible.
She was a house wife and also worked as a domestic worker for several years in Blackstone, VA for various homeowners. Her many hobbies were gardening, especially flowers, spending time with her family, friends and church family. Additionally, she loved attending the Senior Citizen Center.
She leaves to cherish fond memories:Â two sons, Kenneth Johnson (Dorothy), James Johnson (Joyce), one daughter, Gladys Johnson (Ron); six grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; one brother Adolphus Hawkes (Alice); sister-in-laws, Polly Hawkes, Thelma Johnson and Bernice Johnson; one uncle Alvin Hawkes; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services Friday, October 24, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Poplar Lawn Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
