Obituary for Eva M. Jones
Eva McKay Jones of Crewe, VA passed away Thursday, May 6, 2010 at Heritage Hall Healthcare, in Blackstone, Virginia surrounded by her family. Eva was born December 20, 1914 in Crewe, Virginia the daughter of the late Lewis E. and Grace A. Perry Watson. She was the second of seven children, 4 preceded her in death. Eva accepted Christ in 1926 at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Blackstone, Virginia under the leadership of Rev. Junious Rather. She was educated at the Mt. Nebo Elementary School and the Nottoway Training School.
At an early age she moved to Brooklyn, New York and found work as a Nanny which afforded her the opportunity to travel with the families to various resorts on Long Island (Hamptons), Rhode Island (Newport) and Connecticut. She went to night school to complete her education
On October 2, 1942 she was joined in holy matrimony to John C. Jones, who preceded her in death. Upon marrying John she moved to Baltimore, Maryland where she worked and studied at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. She joined Union Bethel Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Baster and Rev. Dobson.
Eva retired from the Peabody Conservatory of Music in 1977 and returned home to care for her parents. She rejoined Mt. Nebo and served faithfully as the Sunday School Musician, Recording Secretary of the Senior Missionary Circle and a Member of the Pastor’s Aide until her health began to fail. She was an avid gardener and lover of nature and music. She enjoyed reading and sharing stories of her life and adventures.
Eva leaves to mourn two brothers, Stanley Watson (Lois) Chesapeake, VA, Winston Watson (Hettie) Tucson, AZ, one sister-in-law Lucille Watson (Crewe) and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral Services Monday, May 10, 2010 at 12:00 noon at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
