Ethelda Bagley Hawkes entered into eternal rest on September 24, 2008 at Southside Community Hospital in Farmville, VA. She was one of three children born to Inez B. Sykes and the late Doc Sykes. She is preceded in death by her brother, James and her son, Alton Jr.
Ethelda was educated in the Nottoway County School system and later furthered her education at Southside Community College in Alberta, VA. Ethelda joined the staff of Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in October of 1986 as a Nurse’s Aide. Although her official job title was that of a Nurse’s Aide, Ethelda was better known for her creativity and joyous atmosphere she brought to the job. She was always creating arts and crafts for the patients and forever putting a smile on the face of her fellow co-workers.
A devoted Jehovah’s Witness, she pent much of her free time attending bible study and working out in the community to spread the word. She was well known and loved in her congregation.
Ethelda enjoyed life to the fullest and her warm and happy spirit was infectious. She always put her family and friends first and was very generous with her time. Ethelda loved to make people laugh and anyone she met she affectionately called them “Boo”. Some of her favorite pastimes included drawing, knitting, and cooking. Ethelda is a beautiful spirit that will be missed by all.
She leaves to cherish her memory a loving mother, Inez Sykes of Blackstone, VA; a devoted daughter, Tanisha Hawkes of Virginia Beach, VA; one brother, Benjamin Sykes of Burkeville, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
