Obituary for Ethel Lee Johnson
ETHEL LEE JOHNSON was born in Mecklenburg County, VA on September 16, 1913. She was the fifth of nine children born to Warren and Ida Lee Rainey Jefferson Hawthorne. Her parents preceded her in death.
She worked as a domestic aide for various families, including the Tatman family. Ethel also worked as an aide at Maple Lawn Nursing Home where she worked until her health began to fail.
In 1933, Ethel joined Springhill Baptist Church and was baptized that same year. She was a member of the church for over seventy-five years where she held many offices. She was a member of the Missionary Society, Altar Guild, and was a Sunday School teacher, and served as Sunday School Superintendent on Women’s Day. Ethel was also a member of various choirs and sang in the church for over thirty years. She was a Deaconess and became a member of the Deaconess Society in 1958.
Ethel was married to John Jefferson, Sr. on June 3, 1933, and from their union two sons were born, John Jefferson, Jr., and Robert Lee Jefferson. In 1969 she married Arthur Johnson, Sr., both of her husbands preceded her in death.
All eight of Ethel’s siblings preceded her in death, Alice Hopkins, Pearl Valentine, John Gilbert Hawthorne, Willie Manson Hawthorne, Sr., Sallie Lou Hawthorne Watkins, Ida Belle Hawthorne Patterson, Josephine Woodson, and Mary Elizabeth Rucker.
On January 28, 2011, God saw fit to call His Song Bird home. Left to cherish her memory are two sons, John Jefferson, Jr. (Rose Marie, deceased) and Robert Jefferson (Janet); four granddaughters, Angela Jefferson, Jill Jefferson, LaTonya Jefferson Hill (James, Jr.), and Ethel Jefferson Ward (Marc); five great grandchildren; twenty-nine nieces and nephews; and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral Services Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at 12:00 noon at Springhill Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
