Obituary for Ethel J. Rawls
ETHEL J. RAWLS, daughter of the late Charlie Woodson Jefferson and Mary Lenora Jefferson was born August 8, 1912 in Burkeville, Virginia. She went home to be with her God on Friday, May 11, 2012 after a lengthy illness.
She moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at an early age. She joined the Army, but only stayed for a short period of time because of her weight, she was a very thin person at that time. She continued her education and became a Registered Nurse and worked until she retired.
She met Othel Rawls and they were married on October 27, 1952. For thirty years, their’s was a life of love and devotion.
She joined the Mt. Zion Baptist Church under Reverend Hiawatha Coleman in the early 1950’s and served faithfully. She was devoted and became lifetime friends with Mr. & Mrs. Willie Hinton.
For those who knew her, her strength of character, intelligence, dignity and loving kindness was a familiar trademark. She loved her nieces and nephews.
Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Othel; sister, Dorothy Rogers; brothers, Earnest, Howard, Waverly and Charlie Jefferson; and a devoted neighbor, Mrs. Gloria Jordan.
Her memory will be cherished by her loving nieces, nephews, and other friends.
Funeral Services Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 11:00 am at W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Blackstone with interment in the Jefferson Family Cemetery, Burkeville.
