Obituary for Ethel J. Jordan
On Thursday, September 14, 2017, our Lord and Savior, in His infinite wisdom, called His beloved daughter, Ethel Virginia Jones Jordan, home to eternal rest.
Ethel was born on September 30, 1937, in Dinwiddie County, Virginia to Kate Elizabeth and Georgie B. Jones. She was educated in Dinwiddie Public Schools.
Ethel accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of the Poplar Lawn Baptist Church where she served faithfully. She was a Deaconess and a member of the Usher’s Ministry, Pastor’s Aid, and Missionary Ministry.
Ethel was employed by Craddock Terry Shoe Corporation until it closed in 1983. She then joined her nephew, Harold Claiborne at the Country Inn Restaurant where she shared her delicious recipes as head cook until her retirement in 2007. She was known throughout the community for her labors of love. She was chauffeur to some; caregiver to others; advisor and counselor to many; but loved by all.
She was a God fearing woman who lived by the motto: “May the work I’ve done, speak for me. May the life I live, speak for me”. And her works and life have spoken clearly over the years because she was known throughout the region for her generous and loving service to her church, her community, her family, but ultimately to God.
Ethel was married to the late Rev. David A. Jordan. The couple was blessed with four children: David Darnell (deceased), Kelvin, Bettie and Gregory. She was the first lady of the Levi Baptist Church (Green Bay, Virginia), New Witt Baptist Church (Farmville, Virginia), Triumph Baptist Church (Darlington Heights, Virginia), and Friendship Baptist Church (Kenbridge, Virginia). She was a faithful wife, loving mother; devoted grandmother; and cherished great grandmother.
She leaves a legacy of love and faithfulness. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of: her son, Kelvin Jordan (Varie), Petersburg, Virginia; daughter, Bettie Jordan Backus (William), Moseley, Virginia; son, Gregory Jordan (Laurie), Ashland, Virginia; four grandchildren: Chasten Davis, Moseley, Virginia, Chaz Davis, Graham Terrell (Sara) both of Richmond, Virginia and Kara Terrell, Alexandria, Virginia. Three great grandchildren: Joziah Davis, Amelia Terrell and Charlotte Terrell, all of Richmond, Virginia. Two loving sisters: Dollie Forney and Georgie Mae Evans (Wesley), both of Dinwiddie, Virginia. One sister-in-law, Mary Jordan, Jamaica Queens, New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends; and a faithfully, devoted friend, John Oliver.
Mom, take your rest. You were an excellent wife, mother, sister, aunt, first lady, leader and friend.
