Obituary for Ernestine S. Tucker
A celebration of the centennial life for the Matriarch of our family Ernestine Smith Tucker. She has been faithful and supportive of our family for over 100 years. She has played an instrumental role in instilling in our children and other loved ones the values of honesty, integrity, hard work, and perseverance. Her faith in God, adherence to His word and Christian examples of compassion has not only inspired others, but set a standard for our family.
Ernestine Smith Tucker departed this life on Monday, April 11, 2022 at her home in Blackstone, VA surrounded by her family. She was born February 2, 1922 to the late Eddie and Minnie Smith in Sussex County. Ernestine was the oldest, and last of nine children. She was preceded in death by all of her siblings.
She was a former member of New Hope Baptist Church in Sussex County, VA, she was baptized at an early age. She later joined Spring Hill Baptist Church when she married her husband and moved to Nottoway County. She was the oldest member of the church until her passing.
She met and married the love of her life James Thomas (Jim) Tucker, and to this union seven children were born. She was preceded in death by her husband, James “Jim” Tucker, son, Quentland E. Tucker, daughter, Annie T. Williams, and grandsons Raphael X. Williams and Ben L. Browder.
Ernestine worked for Billy and Ida Gunn on their farm and babysitting their children. Once the children were older, Mrs. Gunn got her a job working for Clay’s Hatchery under the leadership of Mr. Elmer Clay she continued to work there until her retirement. She also worked part-time at the local radio station in Blackstone, now the WBBC 93.5 “The Bobcat” cleaning, and cleaning the masonic lodge. She was a member of the Senior Citizen at the VFW and also the Golden Agers of Nottoway County, and loved to attend it weekly with her friends. She participated in all of the functions, but especially loved the fashion shows. She loved singing her favorite song, “Precious Lord” and watching westerns. She will be greatly missed, but always loved and remembered.
She leaves to cherish her memories her loving daughters, Brenda Boykins of Philadelphia, PA, Barbara Jones of Kenbridge, VA, Claudia Kelly, Ruby Love, and Tuandra Spratley (with whom she lived with for the last six ½ years), all of Blackstone, VA. A grand-daughter whom she raised, Andrea Jefferson. One sister-in-law, Hattie Smith of Richmond, VA. She also leaves 17 Grandchildren, 39 Great Grandchildren, and 21 Great-Great Grandchildren.
