Obituary for Elco Van Person
Elco Van Person departed this life Tueday, June 18, 2019 at approximately 5:00AM while at the Glen Bernie Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, Virginia.

Elco was the first born of Gladys L. Person and the late Richard Stansberry Person. He was baptized at Liberty Baptist Church at an early age and was preceded in death by his father, brother: Kelly, step-children: Freda & Bernice.

Elco graduated from Russell Grove High School in 1966 where he played football under the auspices of Coach Tillerson and Mr. Lindsey. In the community, he enjoyed playing football with his neighborhood friends (Mondreys).

After graduating high school, Elco attended Kittrell College in Kittrell, North Carolina. Majored in Physical Education. Once completing Kittrell, he joined the United States Navy on February 2, 1969.

Elco trained at the United States Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinoise with Company 75. As a sailor, Elco, cruised to Vietnam, Australia, and numerous other places in the world, which afforded him the opportunity to meet hundreds of people speaking various languages from various cultures. His last World Cruise tour on the USS Shangri- LA in 1970, took him around the world in 287 days. As a Seaman (SN), he transferred to the Naval Reserve on December 1970 at the Naval Reserve Manpower Center in Bainbridge, Maryland. He received medals of honors: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Elco had a Honorable Character of Service when he exited the service. Finally, completed his education at Va. Union Univ. receiving a BS degree. He was employed for over twenty years working as a substance abuse Counselor.

Elco is survived by his wife, Lateefah; step-children: Ercelle, Maurice and Alvin; 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; mother, Gladys Person; three sisters: Sharron (Charles); Germaine (Allen) and Ycola (Norris). Three brothers: Richard, Rex and James; sisters-in-law: Helen (Dallas), Virginia, Thelma, and Frances; brothers-in-law: Bob (Hattie); Joseph & Allen. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral Services Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Liberty Baptist Church, 12901 Genito Rd., Amelia, VA 23002. Private interment Monday, June 24, 2019 at Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia.
