Deaconess Edwina S. Clarke (Wena), 89 of 19402 Braebrook Dr., Colonial Heights, VA entered glory at her appointed time with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 after a long and beautiful life.
She was a native of Dinwiddie County, Virginia and the daughter of the late James A. and Virginia H. Spicely. She confessed Christ at an early age and became a member of the Mount Poole Baptist Church in Ford, VA. She was a devoted member who served diligently on various boards until her health began to fail. She was chairwoman of the Deaconess Board for over 50 years. She also was Past Worthy Matron of the Bethune Chapter #224, Order of Eastern Star. She was a member in long standing of the United Tents of Virginia.
She was a retiree of Virginia State University with over thirteen years of service. As a young woman she was employed in the laundry at Fort Pickett, formally known as Camp Pickett in Blackstone, VA.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Deacon Jessie W. Clarke; three brothers, James (Archie), Lloyd and Hugo (Mac); and two sisters, Inez and Elaine.
Edwina was one of God’s special flowers and exhibited great love for her family and friends. Her heart was big enough to include all and her manner of dealing with people left an indelible mark. Edwina was also supported by the family of her son-in-law, the Edmonds and Walker families.
Over the years Edwina was Auntie to all the children; most of them spending time at her home being cared for by “Aunt Wena”. She loved children and cherished her time spent nurturing them. Truly she was special, an amazing woman who was always soft spoken and loved unselfishly. She will be missed dearly………
Her care was entrusted over the years to several loving and dedicated companions, Verna Smith, Rhonda Bradley, and Charlotte Parker. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff of Hopewell Health Care Center who provided extraordinary care during her period of declining health.
