Obituary for Edward H. Stokes

Edward H. Stokes, son of the late Richard and Hannah Stokes was born on April 29, 1928 in Nottoway County, Virginia. He peacefully passed away on February 7, 2023 at the age of 94.

Edward is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years; the love of his life Josephine Spicer whom he affectionately called Josie. They were united in marriage on October 26, 1950.

Edward accepted Christ an early age and was a long-time member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Burkesville, Virginia. Edward, affectionately known as Uncle Ed received his education in Nottoway County’s Public School System.

His career began in the US Army (World War II) on March 13, 1946 as a First Cook 060 where he served for 3 years and received the Purple Heart.

He retired from Sparrow’s Point Ship Yard as a painter. During his spare time, he enjoyed playing pinochle & spades while trash talking with family and friends. He was so good of a player that he played pinochle alone. In addition, spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grands, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends is something he greatly enjoyed.

Edward is preceded in death by 13 siblings; son-in-law (Demetrius “Rascoe” Payne); one granddaughter (Tataneshea Green); one great-grandson (Kylan Smiling).

He leaves to cherish his fond memories: his son, Edward Stokes Jr. (Irene); 3 daughters, Sharlene, Deborah, and Yvette (Melvin); 14 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
