Obituary for Douglas E Newsome Sr

Mr. Douglas E. Newsome Sr., 67, of 14309 Woodsedge Road, South Chesterfield, Virginia was called to rest, Saturday, May 20th,2023 at Tri-Cities Hospital in Hopewell, Virginia after a long battle with Lung Cancer and COPD.

Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, father James A. Newsome, mother Martha W. Newsome, son Douglas E. Newsome Jr. and nephew Marcus K. Diggs.

Douglas was born November 4th, 1955 in Chesterfield County. He was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church where he was baptized at an early age.

Douglas was a graduate of Thomas Dale High School in 1974. While attending middle and high school, he was a member of the Boy Scouts and played basketball alongside the late great Moses Malone. He was also in a small band with friends where he played guitar. He had a love of music, particularly James Brown and Michael Jackson. Douglas was affectionately called “Cassadine” , “Nut Bush” or “Doug E. Fresh” by those closest to him. He loved fishing and belonged to a “fishing club” with friends. His friends would laugh because he only went to socialize and probably only caught one fish. He loved “old” cars, going to the drag races with his daughter and grandson, and loved the “need for speed”.

Douglas attended Trucking School where he obtained his CDL and worked for Franklin Distribution. Other jobs included John Holland Company, Allen Industries, and Chesterfield County. He retired from Park 500/Philip Morris after 30 years of service. He received several awards and accolades for his hard work including the Presidential Award.

During his years of retirement, Douglas spent time with his family and friends. He traveled, spent time outdoors, and even babysat his grandson. He could usually be found outside under the “Retirement Tree” with PeeWee, Skipper, Clifford,Dick, Rusty, Craig, and David.

Douglas is survived by his wife of 40 years, Andredoria “Cookie” Newsome, daughter Asha(Maurice), 2 grandchildren Zavien and Aviana, niece-daughter Bobbie “Peaches” Stewart and great-nephew Bryce Stewart. Three brothers Ernest “Skipper”(Cordella) and James “BooBoo” McCray of Petersburg, Lawrence “Mannie” McCray (Delores) of Henrico, one sister Sandra Bland(Wondriet) of Petersburg, brother-in-law Thomas D. Bouldin III(Yvonne) of Chesterfield, sister-in-law Jacqueline Diggs-Hawkes(Michael) of Chesterfield, sister/friend Veralyn T. Goode(Rod) of Chesterfield, three aunts Esther Locke of Akron, OH., Margaret-Ann Thompson of Chesterfield, and Doris Newsome of Schertz, TX., 15 nieces and nephews, a host of great nieces, nephews, and cousins, devoted family and friends to include Sherone Turner, Judy Berry, Micheal Turner, Trey Smith, Alonzo Berry, Sukeena Holcomb and countless others.

Viewing Tuesday, May 30, 2023 from 12 to 7PM at Tucker Funeral Home, 415 Halifax Sr., Petersburg, VA  23803.

Funeral Service Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 1:00PM at Tucker Funeral Home, Petersburg, VA.
