Obituary for Dorothy W. Hughes
Dorothy Ophelia Ward Hughes was born July 31, 1937 to William Ward and Daisy Green Ward. She departed this life on June 2, 2009.
She was educated in the public schools of Nottoway and graduated from Luther H. Foster High School with the class of 1956. As she grew older she longed to learn more of Jesus Christ, and joined the New Prospect Baptist Church. She served faithfully on the Usher Board, she also served as a Sunday School teacher, Senior Missionary, Church Secretary, and any other capacity that her services were needed.
Not only did she work in the church but in the community as well. She was a member of the Blackstone Community Chorus in which she sang for many years. She also served as treasurer for the Amelia-Nottoway-Prince Edward United Baptist Association.
In November of 1962 she was joined in Holy Matrimony to Herbert A. Hughes. God blessed this union with three sons. As time passed she dedicated herself to raising and caring for not only her children but other children and her mother as well. She was employed by Piedmont Geriatric Hospital for twenty-four years.
She leaves to cherish her memory: three sons, Herbert A. Hughes, Jr. of Crewe, VA, Verenander Hughes of Orange, NJ and Orlando Hughes of Blackstone, VA; one adopted child and caregiver, Ajaye Jones of Blackstone, VA; two daughters-in-law, Joann Hughes and Sandra Hughes; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; five sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 11:00 am at New Prospect Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home of Blackstone was in charge of the arrangements.
