Obituary for Dorothy Stokes Davis
Dorothy Stokes Davis, was born to the late Solomon Stokes and Kattie White Stokes on July 29, 1927, in Piney Green, Virginia. On December 12, 2019, in the quiet of the morning, God called home His quiet and humble servant, Dorothy. Her homegoing was a lot like her living on earth, just peaceful and goodbye.

Dorothy Davis was a lifelong resident of Richmond, VA. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. Dorothy graduated in 1945 from Nottoway Training School, the first public school to provide secondary education for African Americans in Nottoway County. Dorothy married William Louis Davis, Jr. on December 25, 1946. She worked at the Medical College of Virginia as a hospital housekeeper from 1974; until, she retired in 1992. In her early life, Dorothy worked as a pastry cook and treated her family often to homemade pies and cakes. Everyone loved her cooking. Dorothy loved caring for her family and especially helping to care for her grandkids; whether they lived in Virginia or Louisiana, Granny Dorothy was there, available to travel, and spent as much time as needed with any child that needed her assistance.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Solomon Stokes and Kattie Stokes, her brothers Charles Stokes, Richard Stokes, Joseph Alfonso Stokes, Willie Stokes, Roger Coleman, Allen Coleman, and sisters, Hattie Stokes Clark, Lizzie Stokes, and Annie Mae Coleman.

Dorothy is survived by her six children: William Louis “Butch” Davis III, Bruce Irvin Davis, Ralph Edward “Pops” Davis (Randi), and Wanda Mae Davis (Xavier) all of Richmond, VA, Marvin Wayne “Chick” Davis (Genesee) of Ashland, VA, and Charles Ray Davis (Wanda) of Harvey, LA; seven grandchildren, Lehidama Davis, Sharita Davis, Lamonda Horne, Matthew Davis, Krystal Davis, Rayanda Davis, and Devin Davis; 12 great grandchildren. She also leaves to cherish her memory a devoted former daughter-in-law Theresa Davis and nephew, Daniel Stokes, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral Services & Internment: Saturday, December 21, 2019 at 1PM at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Blackstone, Virginia.
