Obituary for Dorothy Mae Johnson
Dorothy Mae Johnson was born to Reverend Morris and Idella Bland on May 8, 1940, in Blackstone, VA.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her mother and father, Morris and Idella Bland; brothers, Walter M. and Morris O. Bland Jr.; sisters, Eva Bland and Cora B. Ghee.
Dorothy was baptized and received Christ Jesus as her Lord and Saviour at an early age at Mt. Zion RZUA Church and served as a doorkeeper for over 30 years. She attended A.G. Richardson School and Luther H. Foster High School in Nottoway County. Dorothy worked at Mill Inn, M & B Headwear and Hobbs Family Day Care until retirement.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her great memories: her loving husband of 61 years, Kenneth W. Johnson, Sr.; sons, Kenneth W. Johnson, Jr. (Michelle), Vincent A. Johnson (Gladys); six grandchildren, nine great grands; five sisters, Virginia Tucker (Jessie), Carrie Hobbs, Ella Bland, Josephine Baskerville (George) and Gloria Bland; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Dorothy will be greatly missed by many, as her and Kenneth’s home was a safe haven for many as they embarked on the beginning of their life journey. Her cooking, kindness and compassion will forever be engraved in the hearts of all who knew her. Helping others was where she found her joy. And that joy propelled her into eternity, for she stood on Nehemiah 8:10b, “for the joy of the Lord is your strength”.
