Obituary for Dorothy L. Stokes
Dorothy Louise Stokes entered eternal rest on June 18, 2010 at the age of 86. She was born on April 22, 1924 to the late Clara Davis Branch and Houston Branch. Her courage, kind heart and compassion for others will remain in the hearts of all that knew her.
Mrs. Stokes attended public school in Nottoway County and stopped school at an early age to help her Daddy take care of her young siblings after the unexpected death of her mother. On January 16, 1943 she married James Edward Stokes, Sr., who predeceased her on November10, 2006. They were married 63 years. Mrs. Stokes was a homemaker for many years until she started working for the Nottoway County School System in which she retired after 25 years as a school bus driver. She enjoyed driving the neighboring students back and forth. The life of Mrs. Stokes has been rewarding. She always enjoyed family and friends stopping by to visit, to sit and chat a while. She was a devoted member of the Mt. Gazerine Baptist Church and faithful in her attendance.
Mrs. Stokes was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Horace Davis and Edward Branch; children, Katherine and James, Jr.; grandson, Jaykell. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Tilda Davis(Warren); devoted sisters, Willie Bernice Foster and Gertie Mae Hawkes (Lincoln); daughter-in-law, Bessie; two sister-in-laws, Martha Walker and Betty Stokes; loving and devoted grandchildren, James D., III (Pam), Signithia Michelle, Tracey Katherine, and Warren Jr.; four great-grandchildren, Sharaka, James Lorenzo, Travis and JaQuan; one great-great-grandson, TyQuan; four step-great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Brittany, Michelle, Eric and one step-great-great granddaughter, Samarria; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
