Obituary for Dorothy F. Harris
Gently and peacefully our family circle was broken on Wednesday, August 27, 2008. Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend, DEACONESS DOROTHY FITZGERALD HARRIS, was called home from labor to reward.
Dorothy was next to the youngest of six children born on February 12, 1935 in Nottoway, Virginia to the late Aaron and Lillie Fitzgerald. She was educated in the Nottoway County Public School System.
Mama confessed Christ as her personal Savior, was baptized, a became a member of New Prospect Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend Raymond Wilkerson. She was an active member of New Prospect Missionary Circle, Senior Choir and Deaconess Ministry.
She worked for a while at Oliver Eggs in Crewe, Virginia and she also did some babysitting from time to time. He greatest joy was singing solo’s in the church and everywhere else. She loved to sing, especially when she went out to visit the sick.
She was united in holy matrimony to Thomas Burlie Harris on October 7, 1959. To this union five children were born. Daddy preceded Mama in death in October 1997, as did brother’s Sidney, Stanley, Edward and Aaron and one sister Inez.
Left to cherish her memories are five children: two daughters, Carolyn H. Fowlkes (Bob), Sylvia H. Johnson (Wendell); three sons, Willie A. Harris, Thomas W. Harris, Sr. (Doris) and Marcus L. Harris; eleven grandchildren, Ketisha, Corey, Teon, Samantha, Crystal, Thomas Jr. (Lila), Stephanie, Shanise, Steven, Whitney, and Kiani; two great-grandchildren, Teona and Ke’Asha; three sisters-in-law, Alma Fitzgerald of Blackstone, Hazel H. Pugh of New York and Fannie H. Parker of Baltimore, Maryland; one brother-in-law, Junious Harris of New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
