Obituary for Dorothy E. Stokes
Dorothy Elizabeth Stokes transitioned from this earthly life to rest and peace on Friday, August 23, 2013 in the comfort of her home at 6:40 p.m.  She was born March 11, 1926 to Mr. Johnny and Minnie Green Harris.
She was educated in Nottoway County Public School and graduated from Nottoway Training School.  She was employed at Piedmont Geriatric Hospital for 18 years and five months from which she retired  on March 1, 1991.
Dorothy accepted the Lord Jesus as her personal Savior and was baptized at Spring Hill Baptist Church in Blackstone, Virginia.  She served as a faithful usher until her health prohibited her to serve in the ministry
Dorothy was preceded in death by one son, Charlie (Bubba Stokes); five brothers, George (Linwood), Ernest, James Wilbur, Thomas and Johnny Harris; seven sisters, Emma Harris, Francis Harris, Polly Hawthorne, Laura Lacy, Barbara Jean Johnson, Marjorie Ballard and Mary Williams.
Dorothy loved cooking, talking with friends, dining out and just being with her family.  She loved sitting on her porch and watching her grand and great grandchildren playing.  They were the joy of her life.  She was known by her smile, sweet personality and loving hugs and kisses.
Dorothy loved communicating with her friends and had several friends who enjoyed talking to her, to name a few, Clara Hawkes. Easter Epps, John Jefferson, Mamie Jane Morgan and Rosa Davis.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories:  three daughters, Alice S. Barner (William), Regina S. Johnson (Ron) and Delphine E. Simmons-Fowlkes (James); one step-daughter, Marion W. Brown; eleven grandchildren, Kevin (Regina), LeVar (Jessical), Terrell, LaNeisha, Ronald (RJ), Raven, Makiya, James IV (LA), John, Cassandra and James (Mechete); fourteen great grandchildren, Sydnie, Janaiya, Vineasha, Kevin Jr., Janaria, Jocelyn, Ja’Shone, Karma, Jaylen, Kaori, Cassidy Taylor, Meghan, Chelsea and Tyrika; three brothers, Richard, Charlie (Doretha) and Joseph (Betty): and a host of dedicated nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Spring Hill Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
