Obituary for Doretha 'Nanny' Pettis
“God needed an angel in Heaven, to stand at the Savior’s feet; His choice must be the rarest, a lily pure and sweet. He gazed upon the mighty throng, then stopped and picked the best. With Jesus, “Doretha’s” now at rest.” Ms. Doretha Pettis, “Nanny”, 85, of Heritage Hall, 900 South Main Street, Blackstone, VA, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 18, 2016, after a lengthy illness. She was born on February 16, 1930, to the late John Ed & Rosa Pettis. She was preceded in death by five brothers, John, Henry, Fred, James, & Bobby Sr., a sister, Lucille Love, and a great grandson, Jawaan Hawkes. Doretha was baptized at an early age, at Union Baptist Church, Crewe, VA. Her daughter, son-in-law, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren were her heartbeat.
Nanny attended Nottoway County School and retired after 30+ years of service at Holly Farms Poultry Company. After retiring and until her health began to decline, Nanny took an interest in the daily reading of “Our Daily Bread”, surfing the television to find a game show or church program, completing word searches, and watching the cooking shows and burning up the kitchen, by attempting some of the recipes. She even wrote a song, “The Abrasion” that she would often joke and sang; unfortunately, it never made it to the recording studio.
Nanny leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter and son-in-law, William H. & Lillie Mae Pettis Love, two grandchildren, Cynthia Farley (Richard Sr.), Evelyn Hawkes (Carl, Jr.); four great grandchildren, LaToya Harvey, (Mack Jr.), Louis “Jerrod” Farley, LaCara Hawkes, and Ciara Farley; four great-great grandchildren, Mackenzie Harvey, Mackari Harvey, Mackiya Harvey, & Ceniya Walker; nine nieces, nine nephews, (Bobby Pettis, Jr., a devoted nephew, whom she raised like her son), a host of great nieces and nephews, other relatives, cousins, and friends. Special thanks to the staff at the Heritage Hall Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Blackstone, VA and her devoted care-takers, Laurie, Dorothy, Darlene, Scoot a boot, and many others.
