Obituary for Dolores Phelps

Dolores (Murray) Phelps, (aka Lois and/or Lo) was born to the late Daniel and Marie Murray on June 8, 1936, and was the second eldest to her 10 siblings. Lois was educated in the NYC Public School System and graduated from Textile Alternative High School.

Lois married Ray Phelps, the love of her life, on April 29, 1957, and from that union, they were blessed with 2 beautiful daughters: Brenda and Towanda. Lois and Ray shared a love-filled life together for 49 wonderful years until 2006 when Ray was called home to be with the Lord.

She resided in Teaneck, NJ from 1971-2004 and was employed at the Midland Bank in Englewood, NJ as the Head Teller for 20 years. Lois loved to host family cookouts at her home in Teaneck, NJ and took joy in preparing her special Sweet Potatoes that were always a big hit. In 2004, she and husband Ray moved to Rice, VA.

Lo loved to dance and her favorite singing group was The Temptations and favorite solo singer was R. Kelly. You could always find her jamming to her favorite song “Step in the Name of Love” and knew that was her song!

Lois loved her entire family and was the quiet strength of the family; some might even say the backbone as she held them up when they were down and most of the time without a frown. Affectionately called “Auntie Lo” by her numerous nieces and nephews, Lois was preceded in death by her eldest sister Jackie, and 5 brothers: Clarence (Bull), Bill, Alvin, Tyrone and Ronnie.

Lois leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters Brenda Granger, Bronx, NY Towanda (Tyrone) Hughes, Rice, VA; grandson, Tyrone Jr. (TJ); grand-daughter Brenda; loving sister, Janie Lou (BeaBea) Woods, Bronx, NY; loving brothers, John (Cheryl) Englewood, NJ; Rod, Bronx, NY; brothers-In-law, Charles and Ezzard; god-sister, Rebecca Boyd, Rice, VA and a host of grand and great-grand nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and friends. A special “Thank You” to Tyrone, Lois’s partner-in-crime and keeper of a special bond, for taking care and thinking of Lois at all times. You are a gem.
