Obituary for Deacon Adolphus Hawkes, Jr.

Adolphus  Hawkes, Jr. , affectionately known as “Junnie,” was the son of the late Dolphus and Emma Jane Hawkes.  As God saw his work completed, he called him home on Monday, April 11, 2016, at his residence.
“Junnie” was born August 8, 1926 in Wellville, Virginia, now known as Blackstone.  He was preceded in death by his three brothers: Thomas, Webster and Lincoln; four sisters: Erma, Cornelius, Lora Jane and Evelyn.
“Junnie” was baptized at an early age at Poplar Lawn Baptist Church, Blackstone, Virginia, where he served faithfully as Superintendent of the Sunday School for over 40 years; ordained as a Deacon in 1955; served as a member of the Senior Choir, Men’s Club, and Men’s Chorus.  Deacon Hawkes served the Lord with love, gratefulness and sincere devotion. He was also a dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge W. H. Hughes #95 of Blackstone.
During his life’s journey, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy (World War II) until 1946 and retired after thirty-two years of service at Central State Hospital. In addition, he pursued his passion to become a barber, receiving his certification at Virginia State College, now known as Virginia State University.  He used those skills as a Master Barber at the Community Barber Shop in Blackstone, VA until his retirement in 2010.
On September 11, 1948, he married Alice Johnson and to this union, seven children were born He was preceded in death by his daughter, Denise Tabon (2012); his grandson, Dwayne Tabon (2001); and his granddaughter, Rachelle Hawkes (2000).
He leaves to mourn but cherish his fond memories: his loving wife, Alice, of sixty-eight years; two daughters: Alicia Carter (Sonny); Deitra Jennings (Kevin); four sons: Adolphus Tyrone (Judy); Clifton (Linda); Dennis (Sheila) and Michael (Lynn); 13 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Polly Hawkes; one uncle, Alvin Hawkes and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including a dedicated nephew Kenneth Johnson, a dedicated cousin Darnell Johnson and dedicated  community friends, Odessa Wilson, Wallace White, Elsie and Alton Dalton.
“Junnie” had a gift of gab; in fact, he never met a stranger. He blessed the hearts and souls of many. In conversation with others, you often heard him say, “Bless You” or quote his famous scripture (Psalms 118:8) “It’s better to take refuge in the Lord than trust in man.”
