Obituary for Clarise Jennings
EDNA CLARISE WYNN JENNINGS was born, March 6, l945 to the union of Lewis E. Wynn and Etta Bradshaw Wynn in Crewe, VA. At an early age she joined the Eleven Oaks Baptist Church where she remained active until her health failed. She was a devoted member of the church and was active in various church functions. Her activities included being a member of the Junior, Senior and Mass Choirs; Chairwoman of the Food Committee for many years; member of the Pastor’s Aid Committee; the church’s Membership Committee and was the Clerk of the church for 26 years, a position she held until recently when she was no longer able to attend services.
She was educated in the Nottoway County Public School System, attending the Hendersonville Elementary School and Luther H. Foster High School from which she graduated in l964. Immediately after graduation she participated in the nursing program while working at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
She returned to Crewe in l965 and married George Edward Jennings of Blackstone. Their union was blessed with one son, Steve Alonzo Jennings.
Clarise was preceded in death by her husband, George; her father, Lewis; her maternal grandparents Mamie and Earl Bradshaw, Sr.; and her paternal grandparents, Lucille and George Wynn, Sr. She leaves to mourn her passing, her devoted son, Steve, her loving mother, Etta W. Jefferson; her sister, Beatrice W. Bush; one niece, Candace M. Bush of Atlanta, GA; one nephew, James Jennings of Blackstone; four step-sisters, Hermania J. Lewis (John) of Petersburg, VA; Inez Jeter (Milton) of Hamden, CT; Carolyn J. Beverly (Charles) and Laura J. Nunnally (Calvin) of Crewe; four step-brothers, Herman Jefferson (Diane) of Augusta, GA; Clarence Jefferson (Judy) of St. Albans, NY; William Jefferson (Dot) of Cincinnati, OH and Michael Jefferson (Hazel) of Crewe; her doting aunts and uncles, Ethel Sayles of Baltimore, MD, George and Clarice Wynn of Silver Spring, MD; Lula B. and Griffen Lewis, Sr. of Windsor Mill, MD; Cornell and Pauline Bradshaw of Crewe; Lillian W. and Charles Scott of Gwynn Oak, MD; Beatrice W. and Fred Allen of Monroe, CT; James Bradshaw of Blackstone, VA; Mary B. Hughes of Richmond, VA.; and Wilbur and Theresa Oliver of Hopewell, VA.; a host of cousins, other relatives and many close and devoted friends.
Clarise loved to cook, so it was fitting that she spent 30 years working in the Nottoway County School System’s Food Services Department, at Nottoway Junior High, Nottoway Senior High, and Nottoway Intermediate School where she served as the manager until her health began to fail and she retired in 2008. She also used her cooking skills and special recipes, which included her famous rolls, to provide catering services for various organizations and activities in the community. One of her greatest passions was to provide comfort and support to families during different occasions with food she prepared.
Clarise truly believed in service to others. Even during her illness, she was consistently concerned about those she knew. She will be greatly missed.
Funeral Services Thursday, January 29, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. at Eleven Oaks Baptist Church, Crewe with interment in the Greenview Cemetery, Blackstone.
