Obituary for Clarence Edward Blackwell
CLARENCE EDWARD BLACKWELL of Crewe, VA entered into eternal rest on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Chippenham Hospital—Levenson Heart Center in Richmond, VA.  He was born in Crewe, VA on March 1, 1941 to the late Nelia I. Price Blackwell and Clarence Blackwell.  He was educated in the Nottoway County Public Schools, Nottoway County, VA and graduated from Luther H. Foster High School in 1959.  In December of 1959, he joined the United States Army, after his three year term serving his country in the states and abroad, he was Honorably Discharged.
He was baptized and joined New Bethel Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of Reverend S.C. Fitz, serving to the best of his ability.
Upon returning from the Army, he settled in Baltimore, MD where he worked at the Maryland National Bank, he later became employed by Bethlehem Steel Company for thirty five years and retired as General Forman of the Ore Handling Department.  Upon retiring, he moved back to Crewe, VA to live.  In 1999 Clarence reinstated his membership with New Bethel Baptist Church where he became a member of the Senior Choir, later becoming the guitarist for the choir, serving faithfully until his health began to fail.  He also played guitar for the Harmonizing Echo Gospel Group of Crewe, VA.
While living in Baltimore, MD Clarence joined the Ray of Hope Baptist Church where the Reverend Dr. Charles M. Franklin, Sr. was pastor.
January 8, 1961 Clarence married his friend, the love of his life Lula Rather.
He leaves to cherish his memories:  his wife, Lula of the home; one son, Ronald Andre’ Blackwell, Sr. and his wife Carol, one grandson, Ronald Andre’ Blackwell, Jr., one granddaughter, Jessica Andrea Blackwell, one great granddaughter, Dillyn Andrea Blackwell, all of Baltimore, MD; two brothers, Walter (Robin) Price of Baltimore, MD and James (Shirley) Price of Fort Washington, MD; two devoted nieces, Alice (Curtis) Hurte of Crewe, VA and Audrey (Larry) Brown of Burkeville, VA; one nephew-like-son, James (Capria) Jones; three sisters-in-law, Gladys Hatcher of Crewe, VA, Thelma Rather of Burkeville, VA and Lorraine Rather of Baltimore, MD; two brothers-in-law, Daniel (Mable) Rather of Crewe, VA and Reverend Richard (Dorothy) Rather of Baltimore, MD; other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church, Crewe with interment in the Crewe Cemetery, Crewe.
