Obituary for Charles W. Fowlkes
Charles William Fowlkes departed this life on August 16, 2015 at the Amelia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center located in Amelia, VA. H was born on October 4, 1938 in Nottoway County, VA to the late George and Bernice Fowlkes.
Charles was preceded in death by two sisters, Ophelia Fowlkes Bridgeforth and Mary Fowlkes; one brother George "Dude" Fowlkes and his loving and devoted wife Shirley Harper Fowlkes.
He is survived by one stepdaughter Joann Harper of Lynchburg, VA; one daughter Wanda H. Ward of Crewe, VA; two sons Charles M. Fowlkes (Jacqueline) of Crewe, VA and Shawn D. Fowlkes (Chrissandra) of Chesterfield, VA; one aunt Queen Wainwright of Philadelphia, PA; eleven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Charles joined First Nottoway Baptist Church at an early age. He received his education at Nottoway County Public Schools. He worked at WSVS Radio Station in Crewe, VA. He also worked for the Amelia County School System and Amelia/Nottoway Vocational Center as a custodian for many years. He retired at the age of 67. Charles was an avid member/leader of his rhythm and blues band "The Wailing Fretts" which performed in many local venues. In his leisure time he enjoyed playing various musical instruments, singing and listening to music. He also enjoyed working in his workshop, hunting, fishing, mechanical work and riding motorcycles.
Charles will be greatly missed by his family and devoted friends, Mary "Liz" Eanes, Michael Ward and James "Jimmy" Fitzgerald.
Funeral Services Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at First Nottoway Baptist Church, Crewe with interment in the church cemetery.
