Obituary for Charles R. Henderson, Sr.
On November 10, 2010, Deacon Charles Richard Henderson, Sr., 84, went home to be with the lord. Charles was born in Powhatan County to Willie Henderson and Rosa Miles Ford. Preceding him in death were his parents; his daughter Dorothy; as well as his brothers Earnest, James, and Clarence. Charles was united in marriage to Cora Lee Jackson on March 18, 1949. From this union five children were born: Dorothy (Deceased), Charles Jr. (Loretta), Robert (Amy), Deborah Clarke (Aubrey), and Jacquelyn Gray (Melvin). Charles and Cora could always be found together and were a shining example what married couple should be. When they were not together he loved to hunt, fish, tend his garden, and just enjoy his family who enjoyed him just as much. His door was always open to family and friends.
Charles received Christ, and was an active and faithful member, deacon, and trustee of Second Antioch Baptist Church. He was also an affiliated member of the Masonic Lodge Shining Light #272.
A U.S. Navy veteran who served in World War II, Charles was a very quiet and gentle man who was always there to lend a helping hand or insightful word. He always provided for his family and was a very hard worker who was in the logging industry for many years until his health no longer allowed him to continue such strenuous duties. Being the hard working man he was, and also not being able to sit around and do nothing, he began a second career as an attendant at the Powhatan County Transfer Station. A devoted county servant who befriended all that came through, Charles became known and loved by everyone who came into contact with him.
He leaves to cherish his memories: ten grandchildren, Anthony, Sr. (Danjile), Robert, Jr., Chavonne Gray, Marcus, Brandon, Derek, Shawn, Brian, Alexia, Jayla; six great-grandchildren, Ny’iana Scruggs, Kiandra Scruggs, Marcus, Ja’Nya, Paris Gray, and Anthony, Jr.; brother Fred, Sr. (Lula) of Ameila; two sisters Octavia Jones (William) and Hattie Harris both of Richmond; four sisters-in-law, Pearl Mickel, Edna Johnson, Geneva Jones (Wilbert), and Geneva Henderson; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends, all of whom were very dear to him.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 14th from 6pm to 8pm at the funeral home.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, November 15, 2010 at 1:00 pm at Second Antioch Baptist Church, Powhatan, with interment in the church cemetery.
Michael W. Hawkes Funeral Home of Amelia in charge of arrangements.
