Obituary for Charity C. Townes
Charity Cathleen Anderson Townes (affectionately known as Plunk to her family and Little Jennie by her loving husband Charles) was born on January 4, 1932 in Nottoway County, VA. Charity departed this life on her 81st birthday Friday, January 4, 2013 at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Blackstone, VA. She was the second eldest daughter of the late Joshua and Geneva (Jennie) Anderson. Preceding her in death were her three eldest brothers, Willie Lee, Junious, and Thomas Edward Anderson and her eldest sister Thelma A. Johnson who passed away 13 months to the day of her death on December 4, 2011.
At an early age, Charity confessed Christ and was baptized by the late Reverend Megginson of Mt. Gazerine Baptist Church. At this time she was worshiping at St. Peter Baptist Church because their church was not complete. Reverend A. H. Wynn was the pastor of the new Spring Hill Baptist Church. Charity was a member of New Union Baptist Church in Baltimore, MD while residing there. Upon returning to Virginia she reinstated her membership at Spring Hill Baptist Church. She attended public schools in Nottoway County, VA graduating from Nottoway Training School with the class of 1950.
In 1955 Charity moved to Baltimore, MD where she met and married Charles L. Townes, Jr. They were married for over fifty years when he preceded her in death on April 1, 2006.
Charity worked various jobs including managing a restaurant for over 30 years, cashiering, and finally retiring from Baltimore City Public schools.
Charity loved her family and would do anything for them.  She also loved clothes, shoes, hats, vacationing, eating out at various eateries, and photographs.

Carter of Baltimore, MD, Marnae Greenhill of Baltimore, MD, Dr. Kimberly Townes of Alexandria, VA, Keisha Mercer (Kevin) of Chesapeake, VA, Deborah and Tracy Townes of New York; six loving nephews, Marshall L. Townes, Jr. (Mary) of Henrico, VA, Daryl Carter of Baltimore, MD, Roderick Carter of San Francisco, CA, Franklin Anderson of Sleepy Hallow, NY, Lamont Townes of Baltimore, MD and Kenneth Woodson of Baltimore, MD; one brother-in-law, Marshall Lee Townes (Barbara) of Highland Springs, VA; four sisters-in-law, Emma Anderson of Baltimore, MD, Martha Stewart of Baltimore, MD, Martha Woodson of Baltimore, MD and Christine Woodson of Crewe, VA; one aunt, Julia White of Baltimore, MD; one very devoted and dedicated niece, Beverly Clay (Floyd) of Blackstone, VA; numerous great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, and devoted and loving caretakers at Heritage Hall Nursing Home.
Funeral Services Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. at Spring Hill Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
