Obituary for Catherine M. Brown
Mrs. Catherine Mendell Brown was born July 5, 1929 in Nottoway County, Virginia to Leroy and Elizabeth Watkins Hawkes. She departed this life on Thursday, November 8, 2012.
She attended school in Nottoway County. At an early age she joined Springhill Baptist Church.
Catherine moved to New York City. While living in New York, she married Joseph Brown, he preceded her in death. She was employed at Montefiore Medical Center in the Nutrition Department for twenty-seven years until she retired in 1995. she was a member of the Hospital Food Administrator’s Association of Greater New York and the 1199 Hospital Union. She lived in New York for sixty-five years and moved back to Blackstone in 2006.
She is survived by her sister, Augusta; god sister, Mattie Collier; godson, Ajani; god-daughter, Syreeta; stepdaughter, Jeanne; nieces, Sue Ellen and Darlene; nephews, Randolph and Darryl; two great nephews; one great, great nephew; one great, great niece; devoted friends, Betty Mavin, Harriett Greenhill and Clara Hawkes; devoted New York friends, Alma Pendleton, Adrine Beaudiue and Shirley Thomas; other relatives and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Springhill Baptist Church, Blackstone.
