Obituary for Catherine H. Hawkes
In the fulfillment of God’s plan for her life, on Saturday morning, April 19, 2014 at Community Memorial Healthcare Center in South Hill, VA., Catherine Lee Hawkes went to join her heavenly Father.
She was the daughter of the late Godfrey and Victoria Hawkes of Blackstone, Va., born December 15, 1918 in Nottoway County.  She was formally educated in Nottoway County.
At an early age, she was baptized into Christian Fellowship at Cedar Hill Baptist Church by the late J. H. Bagley.  Catherine was a faithful member of the Senior Choir, Willing Workers Circle, Sunday School and Deaconess Ministries.  She was a devoted member and served in any capacity when called upon. Catherine spread her love and joy in the community by singing with the Blackstone Community Chorus, as well as being a member of the Golden Age’s Senior Citizens’ program, Jolly Social Club and Eastern Star.
On August 9, 1941, she was united in marriage to Harry L. Hawkes, the oldest son of the late McToy and Ida B. Hawkes.
Catherine was employed by Nottoway County Public School System as a food service attendant and bus driver for many years where she touched young lives with her kind smile and words of encouragement.  She was like a second mother to many of her loved ones, who will remember her fondly.
Catherine had many devoted family members and friends.  She is survived by one sister, Lucille Turner; two brothers-in-law, Joe Hawkes and Alvin Hawkes; two godchildren, Joanne Wilson and Harry Hawkes; an adopted godchild, Angel Perry; a devoted friend & cousin, Ethel Coleman; nephew, Stanley Hawkes; nieces, Alice Hawkes, Charlotte Laws, Verna Rhoades, Berthell Epes, Loretta Miller, Linda Hines, Rose Lee, Vickie Elliott and a host of cousins and friends.
Lovingly referred to as “Cattie” or “Aunt Cat”, she was a godly and virtuous woman who showed us how to keep the faith and walk in God’s heavenly light.  She will truly be missed and never ever forgotten.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 22 from 7 to 8 pm.  Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, April 23, at 12:00 noon at the Cedar Hill Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.

The family request any monetary expression of kindness be donated to Cedar Hill Baptist Church in honor of Catherine Hawkes.
