Obituary for Carolyn Jean Hanks
Carolyn Jean Eppes Hanks was born in Crewe, VA on February 9, 1945 and departed this life on Monday, February 1, 2016 in Raleigh, NC, 8 days before her 71st birthday. Jean (as she was known by her family and childhood friends), was the first of the seven children born to the union of Roger Cornelius Eppes and Margaret King Eppes.  She completed her education in Nottoway County Schools where she was an outstanding student starting from her earliest days at Hickory Grove Elementary School in Crewe. She was valedictorian of her seventh grade graduating class at Ingleside Elementary School in Burkeville, VA and continued her academic achievement at Luther H. Foster High School, graduating in 1964 as class salutatorian.
Following high school, on February 7, 1965, Jean married William Rogers Hanks, Sr. (Hanks) of Crewe, a union that lasted until his death on November 24, 2007.  Jean and Hanks were blessed with two children, Felita (Cookie) and William, Jr. (Bill).
Jean accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Eleven Oaks Baptist Church in Crewe.  She remained a committed and active member of the congregation until she moved to Raleigh, NC in 1984.  In Raleigh, Jean was a founding member of Morningstar Baptist Church World Ministries and was a trustee under the leadership of Pastor Marchall Brunson serving until the time of her death.
Jean was a woman who was loved and respected by all who knew her. She was a supportive daughter, a second mother and role model for her brothers and sisters, a loyal and committed wife, and a loving and self-sacrificing mother and grandmother.  She was an excellent friend and confidant and a hard-working and committed employee.  She retired as a Senior Application Specialist from ElectroSwitch Electronic Products in 2010 after almost 30 years of service.
Those of us who knew her remember her love of jigsaw puzzles, the Los Angeles Dodgers, TV westerns, and the Food Network!  She loved cooking for her family and friends and she also loved to read; she loved her church and she loved the Lord.
She leaves to cherish her wonderful memory:  her mother, Margaret Eppes, Crewe, VA; her daughter, Felita Hanks Jackson  Woodbridge, VA; her son, William Rogers Hanks, Jr., Raleigh, NC; son-in-law, Jeffery Jackson; daughter-in-law, Chante’ Hanks; grandsons, Jay and Jordan Jackson and Jagger and Storm Hanks. She also leaves three brothers: Roger Eppes (Jenny) Newport News, VA; Thomas Eppes, Jackson, MS; Michael Eppes (Tichi), Richmond, VA; three sisters: Joann Mickens (Frank), Jackson, MS; Sharon Hanley (J.T.), Waldorf, MD; and Cynthia Hudson, Richmond, VA. She also leaves several aunts and uncles: Dorothy King Foster, Baltimore, MD; Audrey King Hawkes, Richmond, VA; Jennie Eppes Fitzgerald, Baltimore, MD; Shirley Eppes, Crewe, VA; Rosa Eppes Chaffin, Victoria, VA; Earnestine Eppes, Baltimore, MD; Warren King, Palm Coast, FL;  Paul Eppes, Blackstone, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
