Obituary for Bishop Caliph E. Coles
Caliph Edward Coles, Jr. was called home to be with his Savior on Monday, May 16, 2016 at St. Francis Medical Center in Richmond, VA. Son of the late Caliph Coles Sr and Alice Coles Johnson was born on July 13, 1949 in Lunenburg County. He was also preceded in death by one sister Martha Felder and one brother Roy Roger Coles.
At the early age of six, Caliph began preaching about Jesus Christ to his sisters and brothers, and anyone else who would listen. However, when he was nineteen years old, he was licensed as a minister and eventually started his own church in Blackstone in August 1981. Later, Caliph built the beautiful sanctuary beside his home on Taylor Street for the people of God. He faithfully served as the Bishop of the Pentecost Church of God in Christ until his illness prevented him.
In addition to his ministerial career, Caliph was a faithful employee to N.B. Allen, O.D. Duncanson and Son, and later retired from the Town of Blackstone. Also, for many years Caliph worked his own business called Coles and Son with Leroy.  Another one of his passions was serving on the Blackstone Volunteer Fire Department. He was faithful to this community service until his disability, and received a Lifetime Membership.
Caliph leaves his most memorable and joyous memories to his beloved and devoted wife of 48 years, Mollie Lawson Coles; three loving children, Leroy (JoAnn) Coles of Williamsburg, VA, Deneitra (Joe) Whitaker and LaShaunda Coles of Blackstone, VA; five grandchildren who were his love, Kimberly (Joshua) Taft, LeAnne Coles, Jamar Coles, Caliph Whitaker and Joe Whitaker III; one great grandchild, Joe Whitaker, IV; four sisters, Mattie Crowder and Inell Hite of Victoria, VA, Lillie (Henry) Brown of Blackstone, VA and Alice Spence of Suffolk, VA; three brothers, Henry (Martha) Coles of South Hill, VA, Odell Coles of Kenbridge, VA and David (Alease) Coles of Chase City, VA; eight brothers-in-law, eight sisters-in-law; one devoted friend, Nancy Ann Moody of Blackstone, VA; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
