Life Reflections
Betty Sue Oliver, (88) was born in Crewe, Virginia on April 6, 1936, to the late Dorothy Mae Jones. Betty, affectionately known as "Mother Oliver or Betty Sue" passed from this life into eternal life on March 20, 2025.
Betty received her education at Luther H. Foster High School, currently known as Nottoway High School.
Betty loved math, French, and was a genius with numbers. In August 1956, she married the love of her life, Douglas Lee Oliver, Jr. From this union they had eight children, (Douglas III, Clyde, Melvin Maurice, Gwendolyn, Dolly, Kendra, Anita, and Tammi).
Betty was known as a dedicated worker at Robertshaw Industries in Crewe, Virginia for many years, but to her, her most important job and accomplishment was raising her five girls and two boys to become children of God.
She was passionate about the things of God. She was a worshipper of God, a radical praiser, and a giver.
Her children recall the days when Betty would buy groceries and take several of her bags of groceries and share them with her neighbors. Betty also loved to cook and bake. Her children recall the days when she would bake rolls and cakes from scratch and have them distribute them to her neighbor. Betty also enjoyed doing hair as a hobby and became well known for doing the hair of her neighbors.
Betty was a life-time member of the Temple of Judah Ministries (True Apostolic Church), in Richmond, Virginia, under Bishop Melvin Williams Jr. In her younger years, it was nothing for her to rise at 5am, feed and dress up her seven children, and catch the Greyhound bus to Richmond for church every Sunday. She was a woman of integrity, love, faith, and determination. She lived a life that was dedicated and consecrated to God. She loved praying, reading her Bible, sharing her faith, and using her telephone to call to see how her friends, neighbors, children, and extended family was doing. Betty loved people and wanted everyone to experience the love of God and have eternal life. Her favorite scripture was "Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost".
Though Betty experienced some health challenges in 2020, she counted her "long suffering" as one of the fruits of the Spirit, (Galatians 5:22-23, But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. Against such there is no law). Through it all, she kept her faith, her praise, and unwavering love. She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Oliver, Jr.; her mother, Dorothy Jones; her children; Douglas Oliver, III, Clyde Oliver, and Anita Oliver Johnson. She leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Melvin Maurice Oliver (Myriam), Gwendolyn Kirby (Mark), Dolly Scruggs (Michael), Kendra Monroe (Michael), Tammi Jones (Bobby); daughter in law, Marion Oliver; several siblings, two sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, 16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends.
"Betty (mom), we know that you have passed from this life into eternal life. We will miss you, because we truly love you, but we know God loved you best". - The Family
Betty experienced healing from God as a teenager and as a result she became a strong believer in the power of God. In 1963, she gladly received the gospel when it was presented to her. She was drawn to the powerful fiery preaching and teaching of a young minister that was doing a revival in Crewe from Richmond, Virginia, Bishop Melvin Williams Sr. At this revival, Betty was baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost, according to Acts 2:38. This revival changed Betty's life and she dedicated her life to the Lord Jesus Christ.
