Obituary for Bertha L. Shelton
Bertha L. Shelton departed this life on Monday, December 1, 2014.  She was the sixth child born to Bessie Patton Hilson and Sydney Hilson.  When Bertha was an infant, her family moved from Birmingham, Alabama to Clarksburg, West Virginia. 
After marrying Claiborne Shelton, Sr., She moved to Blackstone.  To this union four children were born, Jo Ann Bland (Walter) both deceased, Ruby Jackson (Richard), Claiborne Shelton, Jr., and Edward L. Shelton (deceased).
She was an active member of Springhill Baptist Church where she served in many capacities, including the deaconess society and the pastor’s aid. Springhill was a very important of her life.  She attended faithfully until her health declined.
Bertha worked for many years at Clay’s Rest Home in Blackstone. She retired in 1983.  She enjoyed growing house plants, especially African violets.  She also enjoyed sports on radio and television.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dea. Claiborne Shelton, Sr.; daughter, Jo Ann; son, Edward; sisters, Ruby Ester and Lula Edwards; and brothers, Ulishous Hilson, Walter Hilson and George Hilson.
She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Ruby, one son, Claiborne Jr., six grandchildren, Walter Bland (Robin), Thomas Quarles, Marc A. Quarles (Claudia), Sharon Cartman (Alvato), Latoya Quarles, Erika Quarles, and Timothy Quarles; twenty great grandchildren, and two great, great grandchildren;  She also leaves numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

Funeral Services Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Springhill Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
