Obituary for Bernice Fowlkes Harris
On the evening of August 16, 2016, Bernice F. Harris, Mother, Grandmother, Wife, Sister, and Friend, departed this life in Richmond, Virginia.  She was the daughter of Dewey W. Fowlkes and Beatrice C. Fowlkes and was born January 3, 1962.  Her parents, who both preceded her in death, instilled in her the love of Jesus Christ and raised her in Cedar Creek Baptist Church.  Also preceding her in death were her mother-in-law, Julia J. Harris, sister-in-law, Diane P. McMillion and brother-in–law, Richard H. Harris, Jr.

Growing up in Kenbridge, Virginia on a farm and educated in the Lunenburg County Public Schools, Bernice tapped into her hard work ethics early.  This led her to a commitment of helping others for a living.  She was employed in the healthcare field for 31 years as a certified nurse’s aide.  Bernice worked many tireless hours in several nursing homes throughout Richmond with great compassion helping and encouraging each patient with a positive attitude and a caring heart.

Bernice had a tremendous sense of dedication to those close to her.   She was a grandmother who went the extra mile to ensure that her grandchildren had what they needed.  Since their union in 1996, she was the devoted wife of Maxie Harris, with whom she enjoyed many activities, including fishing.  She took pleasure in the company of others and a good meal with family and friends.  Bernice was a person that put the needs of others before her own and loved with her whole heart.  She will be remembered for her giving spirit and determination to do the things she set her mind to accomplish.

She will be sorely missed and survived by her husband Maxie Harris; her two daughters, Shantae Bagley and Shan-Troy Fowlkes; her grandchildren Joshua, John, and ShaDaja.  Also left to fondly remember her are her two sisters, Mary F. Smith and Tracey F. Jones; one brother, Beverly C. Fowlkes (Gertrude Hargrove); her father-in-law, Richard H. Harris, Sr.; two brothers-in-law, Michael Harris (Mary), Ricky Harris (Arletta); two sisters-in law, Tilda Lewis-Chalkley (James) and LaShawn Blackwell (Gus); two dear friends, LaKeisha Boyd and Dorothy Gardener; a host of nieces, aunts, uncles, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Blackstone. Interment in the Greenview Cemetery, Blackstone.
